Please ! consider making an investment on our important work.
Dear Friends and the Small World's family, Namaste!
Here at The Small World, we very much hope that you are all doing well and in good health!
We wanted to update you on what we’ve been doing. To start with during this Covid crisis, our immediate response has been to provide hot and nutritious Dhal Bhat meals (rice, lentil, curry, salads and meat) every day to thousands of vulnerable people, including children, women, and daily wage workers.
Now, however, we’ve extended our relief efforts beyond this temporary support; together with the local government of the Solukhumbu district, we’ve initiated vaccination availability by opening the doors of our as yet unfinished clinic there to function as an Emergency Vaccine Center. This is not just about doing what’s right; it’s absolutely critical to stop transmission of this disease and educate people about vaccines as just one solution against Covid.
What that means is this: in a developing country like Nepal, the availability of local community health centers is becoming more crucial than ever before, especially after Covid and the many natural disasters caused by climate change. Because of this need, we are working hard to complete as soon as possible our Phueli Community Health Center. We are happy to report that we have just finished the construction of the earthquake resistant building with local materials; the next task is to finish the inside with furnishings and necessary medical equipment and bring this health center into operation as soon as possible. For this task, we are appealing to all our supporters, and anyone interested, to help us finish this much needed center.
Our engineer and health expert have estimated a budget of $35,000, which will provide for indoor furnishings; an X-ray machine; a USG machine; basic lab equipment; basic dental unit instruments; a sterilizer; setting up a delivery unit; a refrigerator; pharmacy; basics to run OPD; a heater to keep newborns warm; and some beds for inpatients.
In the days to come, we are planning to make our relief work even more long term by focusing on a Children's Education and Livelihood Program. This is a direct result of our on the ground experiences during our urgent relief support, where we are hearing the appeals of many single mothers, porters, and daily wage laborers asking for help with livelihood programs and support for their children's education. In response, this Children’s Education and Livelihood Program will involve in-depth discussions with stakeholders; focusing on needy and affected people in the local communities; and conferring with trekking porters who have been jobless over the past 18 months. Because, Small World strongly believe that communities know what is best regarding their needs; our mission is to empower communities to realize they are capable of creating lasting solutions using their own skills and abilities.
