It's a tough time in Nepal, but still reasons to smile & hope for the future.

Dear Friends and Supporters, Namaste!

With the COVID-19 pandemic impacting everyday life, we thank you for your continued support and wish you, your family, friends, and your community health and peace. Right now, we are also facing challenges of incessant rains since Monday that have triggered floods and landslides in several Himalayan districts as well as in Kathmandu.

However, our relief efforts are continuing unabated every day with high importance since they are so much needed.

We know that times are tough, but there are still reasons to smile. Here, today, we would like you to meet some of our graduated students who have been tremendously supportive in our relief work; from buying food in the markets to helping in the kitchen and with distribution every day to hundreds of the most vulnerable families and children.

Goma Basnet our former students, its her 17 days of continue relief work at The Small World

“I have participated in Small World’s Covid relief work for the last 17 days. I think these past 17 days have been one of the greatest times in my life; with the support of The Small World, I had graduated in Social Work nine months previous, but I really couldn’t figure out how to be involved in some meaningful social work. Honestly, right after my graduation, I also felt sad about what I had studied since I could not get a job and it seemed there were few opportunities in this field. But finally, now, I am feeling proud of what I have studied. During these 17 days, I met so many children, women, and helpful people. Now I am finally feeling I am graduating to real life from my social work studies. Every day, I worked very hard and every morning I am waking up with great pride as a woman from a remote village of Solukhumbu, now able to help so many people in great need. I am so much in touch with my work at this time of emergency, and I give so much thanks to The Small World for supporting me in the next level of empowering and strengthening my dedication.”

– Goma Basnet

"This Covid crisis I had an opportunity to volunteer for emergency food relief with The Small World. This experience was a very rich one for me in so many ways. I met and saw many people in the capital heart of Nepal who are going hungry and without hot meals because of lockdown. I also was able to witness the plight of vulnerable children who have lost their families for Covid; I saw how a health crisis of any kind of crisis hits the poorest and vulnerable people the hardest. With support from The Small World Sponsorship Program, I completed my Health Assistant (paramedics) course and I am very grateful to be part of the health personnel in Nepal with only 0.91 Doctors for every 1,000 people.

This ratio is one of the reasons WHY TSW ENCOURAGES US TO BECOME Health Assistants, so when we complete our studies, we are qualified to run health posts in remote areas – because there is no health care in the mountains. I am very humbled by this experience and exposure. Thank you.”

- Anita Tamang.

Our former graduated students Anita Tamang & Goma Basnet continue helping covid relief effort .

We are so proud to share the story of Goma and Anita. They are great role models for “girl power” in the community! Today, more then three (3) dozen of our graduated girls who have become teachers, nurses, business women, leaders, and journalists to running small businesses, like tailoring and tea shops, are every day playing the role of heroes by dealing with many challenges in their communities.

We are very grateful to Trek Relief for joining The Small World in the fight against Covid in Nepal. They are raising a fund to help us provide immediate relief and recovery support for vulnerable children and families who have lost their jobs. These families are facing an economic crisis which has substantially reduced their ability to manage daily food expenses and provide education and health services to their families in remote Himalayan communities.

This month of June, Trek Relief is raising $25,000 from their supporters, and Founder & Executive Director, Candice Young, has made a very generous offer: to personally match every dollar - up to $25,000 - to provide a total of $50,000 for relief efforts in Nepal. There are so many desperate people who will benefit, and we are grateful that Trek Relief and Candice have teamed up for this most worthwhile effort.

Trek Relief & The Small World both believe together, we will be stronger & more resilient. So, we both connect local communities & global adventure travelers to make a difference by working together at the locally driven sustainable community development projects.

A message from Candice Young, Trek Relief Founder

In times like this, we’re reminded of how interconnected we all are. Thank you for being part of our community. We’re so grateful for your generous support. You can help us by sharing in your network, social media and running your own fundraising campaign.

Stay safe and well,
