Standing Together for Nepal Flood Relief

Dear Friends and Supporters,

Thank You for Your Support

Thank you so much for your incredible response to the devastating floods in Nepal this August and September. Because of your support, we were able to assist hundreds of people, especially women and children, ensuring they moved to safe locations and received immediate necessities such as food, safe drinking water, medical supplies, and menstrual health products in Kathmandu and the Kavre District.

Small World’s Community in Action

Many participants from The Small World’s graduate and girls' higher education programs actively engaged in this mission to help those in need. We are proud to share that we were likely one of the first organizations on the ground, with a strong presence of women leaders during critical times—whether it was during the 2015 earthquake, the COVID-19 pandemic, or the recent Nepal floods.

"Providing relief food to flood victims in Kavre District, where over 79 people lost their lives and hundreds of homes were swept away."

A Deep Appreciation for Our Supporters on the Ground.

Our disaster response is made possible because The Small World is a locally run and deeply rooted organization. We are immensely grateful to all our supporters, volunteers, and partners who have made this vital work possible during such challenging times.

Devastating Glacial Lake Burst in Thame, Solukhumbu

We now want to share news about the catastrophic glacial lake burst that devastated Thame Village on August 16, 2024. This disaster destroyed 38 houses, health centers, schools, and the trekking path, while also cutting off power.

"Thame Village, known as the home of many Everest summitteers, was badly affected by the devastating flood."

The Heart of Thame

The people of Thame are facing an unimaginable crisis, having lost their homes and the heart of their community. Many homes were built with love and sacrifice, often by Sherpas who risked their lives on Everest expeditions. Last year, the village also mourned three young climbers, adding to the heartbreak.

Thame is the beloved hometown of legendary Sherpa climbers like Ang Rita Sherpa, who ascended Everest ten times without supplemental oxygen; Kami Rita, with 30 times summits; Apa Sherpa, with 21 times; and Lakpa Rita, with 17 times. This village holds a cherished place in the history of mountaineering. These climbers have not only brought fame to their village but have also warmly welcomed thousands of Western climbers into their homes and hearts, guiding many to the summit of Everest and sharing their inspiring stories. Their contributions have significantly enriched Nepal's tourism industry, embodying a legacy of perseverance, humility, and resilience

The video below captures the scale of the disaster in Thame.

A Beacon of Hope

Fortunately, the flood occurred during the day, allowing every villager, including all 47 children at the school, to escape to safety.

Join Us in Making a Difference

The Small World’s roots are in the mountains, and Thame holds a special place in our hearts. With winter approaching, The Small World is planning to provide enough warm clothing for all children affected by the devastating glacial lake burst in Thame to keep them warm and safe and to help them continue their education. Education is key to change and hope for the future of Thame.

All aid support will be delivered by Karma Sherpa, accompanied by a few porters, to provide winter clothing for the children in November. If anyone is interested in running a fundraising campaign or would like to join him on the journey to Thame and Khumjung, please feel free to contact us.

The Small World is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in USA. Please share your ideas or join us in supporting the people of Thame during their time of greatest need.
