THANKS TO ELLIE RAYMOND

The Small World is very happy to extend our sincerest thanks and deepest gratitude to Ellie Raymond, a high school student, for her exceptional efforts in supporting continued education for twelve (12) Nepalese children from the remote Himalayan village of Solukhumbu. 

It all began last year, through our partner  Students Shoulder to Shoulder, when Ellie was one of the students who travelled with us for three weeks to help with building schools that had been destroyed by the Nepal earthquakes.  During that time, she had the opportunity, as did the other students, to experience local Nepali culture and lifestyles by staying with a local family and working together with local villagers at the project site. 

At the trip’s end, Ellie trekked on a classical Everest trail before she returned to her home with many beautiful memories. However, though her physical trip had ended, the emotional impact of her journey had not. Instead, it seemed a catalyst for change in her life, because after she returned home, she knew that her work was not done. It was then that Ellie determined to continue her work so even more children could have the privilege of an education. 

To that end, Ellie launched her own fund raising effort with a goal to reach $4,200 for the education of twelve more children. Today, that goal is complete - and next week she is coming to meet with those children and their families in person and also returning to the school she helped to build & her host family .'

But it doesn’t end there, because now Ellie wants to continue her fund raising with a new goal of $10,000 to support the education of 35 more children. This will provide tuition, fees, books, school uniforms, and basic support to their families. 

We don’t seem to have enough words of praise and admiration for Ellie Raymond, an extraordinary girl who is still a high school student, for her dedication to support the education of so many children in the remote Himalayan region of Nepal.  We at The Small World are incredibly inspired by her commitment and enthusiasm to make the world a better place through the gift of education. 

And, in our opinion, there is so much more that Ellie is helping to demonstrate and validate. Her caring dedication and support is a great example of fellowship, and a model in itself, for students helping other students; setting an example for and teaching students to share; highlighting the importance of education for everyone, especially for those much less fortunate; teaching students to share among their families and communities; sharing cultures and expanding understanding of other cultures and the world; giving purpose to one’s life through serving others; and ultimately helping to make our world a better place for everyone to live. 
 
We are very excited to welcome Ellie Raymond next week when she arrives in Nepal. The local people, students, and schools are very happily looking forward to meet with her in person and are planning a cultural dance performed by the local community and students to welcome and honour her!
