The Small World Provided Immediate Support and Building Projects

The two major earthquakes of 7.9 and 7.3 in Nepal on April 29 and May 12, 2015, destroyed or damaged 1,045 classrooms in The Small World working communities in the lower Solukhumbu District. Right after these earthquakes, The Small World initiated immediate relief work to provide tarpaulins for shelters, drinking water, food, and medical support, and built 20 temporary learning centers in the district while coordinating with the District Education office of Nepal to keep the children in school.

Ten months after the devastating earthquakes, The Small World began to build permanent earthquake resistance classrooms. These are a reinforced cement concrete structure (RCC), the first of their kind in this remote region, designed by certified engineers, and approved by Nepal’s government.

These 18 classrooms will benefit nearly 1,000 children directly and allow them to continue in school with a much higher degree of safety. The Small World’s goal us to build 100 classrooms within the next 3 years – by 2018 – to benefit over 5,000 children directly, and thousands more over the generations to come.

We would like to thank all of our generous supporters, partners, and community members who have joined together to combat school dropout rates, early marriages, trafficking, and poverty. Education, we believe, is the key solution to all of these problems in developing countries like Nepal.
